Browse Tab for Entries

When an entry is created in a Format policy, you must specify whether the entry will be browseable.

Browse Index Variations

This section displays a table of Browse Indexes to which this entry will be posted.

Select a variation and the text boxes below the table will display the variation’s indicator, index, subfields, and leading article values. To change how this entry is posted to the selected Browse Index, make changes to these values and click Update. To create a new Browse Index variation, make changes to these values, click In Addition to Others or Supersedes Others, and click Create. To remove a Browse Index variation, select the variation and click Remove.

For example, it might be useful to post the 440 (Series Statement/Added Entry-Title) in the MARC Format to both title and series browse indexes. There will be two Browse Index Variations for this entry. In this case, the values of the indicator positions have no bearing upon which Browse Index(es) to post the entry to, so “No” would be the answer to the Use the Indicator question in the Display Indicator List gadget. Since the heading is to be posted to both indexes, In Addition to Others should be selected. The two Browse Indexes to be posted to would be the TITLE index and the SERIES index, and |w, |? and |= would not be posted to the indexes. According to the MARC 21 Guidelines, the first indicator of the 440 entry is used for nonfiling characters, so for the STI Index Variation, the Leading Article attribute should be set to Indicator 2.

Variations

First, specify whether this browse variation is in addition to other variations or if this variation supersedes the other variations. Click In Addition To Others if this entry should be posted to the specified Browse Index in addition to other Browse Indexes for which this entry qualifies. Click Supersedes Others if this entry should be posted to this Browse Index instead of any other Browse Indexes for which this entry qualifies.

Indicator 1

This attribute contains an indicator value that will cause this entry to be posted to a particular Browse Index. Use the Display Indicator List gadget to specify whether the entry indicator will be used, and if Yes, to specify the indicator value that will determine which Browse Index to use. A list will appear within the gadget, allowing you to select from all possible indicators.

Indicator 2

This attribute contains an indicator value that will cause this entry to be posted to a particular Browse Index. Use the Display Indicator List gadget to specify whether the entry indicator will be used, and if Yes, to specify the indicator value that will determine which Browse Index to use. A list will appear within the gadget, allowing you to select from all possible indicators.

Index

This attribute contains the Browse Index policy representing the browse index to which this entry will be posted. Select a Browse Index policy from the list. The Browse Index Policy helper is available for you to create a new browse index or modify and existing one, if needed.

Subfields

This attribute specifies the subfields of this entry that should be posted to the specified Browse Index. Use the Display Subfields gadget to select all valid subfields or to include only selected ones. Click Include, then select the subfields to include. It is possible to exclude subfields from the index. Click Exclude, and select subfields to exclude. Click OK when done.

Note: The = or ? subfields should not be posted to browse indexes.

Leading Article

This attribute specifies how initial nonfiling articles should be handled when a term is posted to the specified Browse Index. If initial nonfiling articles are not to be used when posting a term to a browse index, a method of identifying nonfiling articles must be specified. Nonfiling articles must be identified by values in the indicator positions (NONE, INDICATOR1, INDICATOR2), from the list of articles appearing in the Language policy for any matching language code in the record (LANG_ART), or from the list of articles appearing in the default language of the Language policy (DEF_ART). The DEF_ART choice in this policy list checks a list of articles in the /Unicorn/Custom/articles file.

Note: The NSB/NSE selection (Non-sorting begin/non-sorting end) value will appear for UNIMARC formats only. The INDICATOR1 and INDICATOR2 values are not available for selection as they are not used for non-filing purposes.

Would the Browse Index Be Used Based on an Entry Combination?

You can create combined browse index variations for a main catalog-type entry. For instance, a combined 100/240 browse index variation can be created. When creating a new browse index variation for an entry, the following combination fields will display only if the entry is a Main entry type, such as the 100 tag.

If this check box is selected, the remaining fields become active.

Combine with Which Existing Entry ID?

Select a valid entry ID from the list. Only entry IDs from the existing format and with the Uniform Title entry type appear.

What Subfield Character Will Delimit the Combination?

Select a valid subfield from the list. All valid subfields for this entry display, except for the SirsiDynix-defined subfields ? and =.

Which Subfields Should Be Posted?
