FAQs: Configuring SirsiDynix Symphony for Main Entry/Uniform Title Combination Browse Index Variation

Is it possible to make a combination Main Entry/Uniform Title browse index variation, such as the 100/240?

Yes. The Uniform Title tag (240) of the MARC bibliographic record contains the uniform title for a work when the bibliographic record also has a Personal Name main entry (100), a Corporate Name main entry (110), or a Meeting Name main entry (111). For certain types of collections, such as music collections, the indexing of the Uniform Title is critical. SirsiDynix Symphony provides an option to treat the bibliographic 1XX (Name main entry) tags and the 240 as a combined author/title entry in the keyword and browse indexes. Authority processing has also been modified to allow this combined entry to be authorized by the 1XX string of the authority record. In catalog formats and authority formats, the Browse Tab for Entries contains five attribute fields for building the combination browse index variations.

What are the policy changes required to support the Main Entry/Uniform Title combination browse index?

SirsiDynix Symphony requires the following Catalog Format policy changes to support Main Entry/Uniform Title combination browse index variation.

For each Main Entry (100, 110, 111) in each catalog format (such as MARC, MUSIC, SERIAL, and more) on the Browse Tab for that entry, create a new combination browse index variation and specify the appropriate Uniform Title entry number (240) and the appropriate combination subfield, usually |t.

Note: The combination subfield specified here should be the same as the combination subfield specified in the catalog format authority variation. For more information, see FAQs: Configuring SirsiDynix Symphony for Main Entry/Uniform Title Combination Authority Validation.

There should be at least two browse index variations, one that is not a combination and one that is a combination. The combination variation should be designated to supersede other variations. If the bibliographic record does not contain a Uniform Title entry, then the original browse index variation will be used. If the bibliographic record does contain a Uniform Title entry, then the new combination browse index variation will be used. Other than the additional combination fields, the two browse index variations should be identical.

Note: It is recommended that both browse index variations contain the same type of subfield list (Include or Exclude). If the subfield list for a browse index variation is an Exclude list, and the subfield list for the combination browse index variation is an Include list, or vice versa, the combined heading will be built based on the subfields indicated in the Exclude list.
