FAQs: Configuring SirsiDynix Symphony for Main Entry/Uniform Title Combination Authority Validation

SirsiDynix Symphony requires the following policy changes to support Main Entry/Uniform Title combination authority validation.

Authority Format Changes

For each leading term entry (100, 110, 111) in each format that can contain a combination Main Entry/Uniform Title leading term, the Main Added Authority entries and Default Authority entries attributes (found on the Thesaurus tab of the authority format entry) should have the Uniform Title tag number (240) that this combination tag can authorize.

For example, in the PERSONAL authority format, the 100 entry would have the 240 entry added to the Main Added Authority Entries and the Default Authority Entries attributes.

For each leading term entry (100, 110, 111) in each format that can contain a combination Main Entry/Uniform Title leading term, on the Authority tab for the entry, modify the existing authority index variation and make it a combination variation with the appropriate combination subfield, usually |t. There should only be one authority index variation per entry. Do not add a second authority index variation.

Note: The combination subfield specified here must be the same as the combination subfield specified in the catalog formats.

For each improper term entry (400, 410, 411) in each format that can contain a combination Main Entry/Uniform Title improper term, on the Authority tab for the entry, modify the existing authority index variation and make it a combination variation with the appropriate combination subfield, usually |t. There should only be one authority index variation per entry. Do not add a second authority index variation.

Note: The combination subfield specified here must be the same as the combination subfield specified in the catalog formats.

Catalog Format Changes

For each Main Entry (100, 110, 111) in the catalog formats that needs to be authorized by a combination authority record, create a new combination authority index variation on the Authority tab for that entry, and specify the appropriate Uniform Title tag number (240) and the appropriate combination subfield, usually |t.

Note: The combination subfield specified here must be the same as the combination subfield specified in the authority formats.

Additionally, the combination subfield must be added to the list of cascade subfields, otherwise the combination authority validation will fail.

There should be at least two authority index variations, one that is not a combination and one that is a combination. If the bibliographic record does not contain a Uniform Title entry, then the original authority index variation will be used to authorize the Main Entry. If the bibliographic record does contain a Uniform Title entry, then the new combination authority index variation will be used to authorize the Main Entry. Other than the additional combination fields, the two authority index variations should be identical.
For each Uniform Title tag (240) in the catalog formats that needs to be authorized by a combination authority record, create a new combination authority index variation on the Authority tab for that entry, and specify the appropriate Main Entry tag number and the appropriate combination subfield, usually |t. There should be one authority index variation for each Main Entry—one for the 100 combination, one for the 110 combination, and one for the 111 combination.

Note: The combination subfield specified here must be the same as the combination subfield specified in the authority formats.

Additional Considerations

If either the Main Entry or the Uniform Title does not match the data in the combination authority record, then both tags will be marked UNAUTHORIZED when the authority checking program is run by the Add, Delete, Update Databases report.
When a Main Entry/Uniform Title entry is edited in the workstation, if that entry becomes unauthorized, only the modified half of the entry will be marked UNAUTHORIZED. The other half of the combination entry will not be marked UNAUTHORIZED until the authority checking program is run by the Add, Delete, Update Databases report.
Terminal punctuation after the 1XX tag will be ignored for the purposes of authorizing the 1XX/240 combination.
