FAQs: Renewing a User’s Library Privileges

How do I renew a user’s privileges if the user forgot his or her library card?

You can use the User Search Helper in the Renew Privilege wizard to search for a user’s record when the user cannot give you a library card to scan.

Important Considerations When Renewing Privileges

If you have extended a privilege in error and would like to modify the privilege expiration date, use the Modify User wizard.
If the user is not found, register the user using the New User Registration wizard.
If a library card is old, the user may have been purged or never entered into the current system, or may have already been issued a duplicate card. Before issuing a new card, determine whether the user is already entered into the system.

Can renew privilege fees be paid automatically?

Renew privilege fees can be paid automatically if the following conditions are met:

The user whose privileges are being renewed has a credit account with a balance that is sufficient to pay the renewal fees.
Your library’s policies are configured to automatically pay privilege fees with money from a patron credit account.
The automatic payment defaults are configured in the Renew Privilege wizard properties.

For more information, see FAQs: Credit User Accounts.

What happens if I modifying the privilege expiration date and user profile in the Modify User wizard versus in the New User Registration wizard?

The New User Registration wizard and Modify User wizard handle modifying a user’s privilege expiration date and user profile differently.

In the Modify User wizard, if you attempt to modify the privilege expiration date, but have the Profile Modified/Auto Extend Privilege property enabled, the privilege limit date in the user profile will always overwrite the custom privilege date. The wizard will display a confirmation message explicitly stating the new date.
In the New User Registration wizard, if you change the user profile and change the privilege expiration date using an override, the custom privilege date will be used rather than the privilege limit date defined in the user profile.
