User Search in Outreach
The User Search window is used to locate an outreach user record. In Outreach, the Outreach Information and Maintenance wizards, the Interest Information and Maintenance wizards, and the History Information and Maintenance wizards have the User Search window as the first wizard step.
Various search options are available in the User Search window. You can perform a keyword or browse search.
• | If you use a Keyword search, the available search indexes may include name, phone, email, user ID, and so on. Keyword search options may display differently based on your library’s settings for User Search Fields in the Global Configuration wizard. Refer to Global Configuration Wizard for information. |
• | If you use a Browse search or a Browse User Group search, the user name search index is the only available search index. The Browse User Group option only displays if the User Group feature is configured on your system. |
To search for outreach users
1 | In the Search For field, type the text to be used to search for an existing outreach user record. |
2 | In the Index field, select the search index to be used in the search. For example, you can search for outreach users by user name. |
3 | If you want to use multiple search options, do one of the following. |
• | Click AND to search for outreach user records using the AND operator. For example, an outreach user record is considered a match if both the specified name and phone number are found in the user record. |
• | Click OR to search for outreach user records using the OR operator. For example, an outreach user record is considered a match if either the specified name or phone number is found in the user record. |
4 | If your library is part of a multilibrary system, select a specific library or library group in the Library field to narrow the outreach user search to a certain library or library group. |
5 | Under Type, select the type of search you want to use to locate outreach user records. |
• | Keyword locates outreach user records that contain the text specified in the Search For field. |
• | Browse produces a list of outreach user records in the alphabetic vicinity of the text specified in the Search For field. For example, a search on "Jones J" might return all users with a last name of Jones and whose first name begins with J. |
• | Browse User Group produces a list of user groups in the alphabetic vicinity of the text specified in the Search For field. Selecting a user group displays a list of the names and user IDs of the members in the group. This field only displays if the User Group feature is configured on your system. |
6 | Click Search to begin your search. |
If a list of matching user records displays, the users are listed in a table. The results include the user name, user ID, alternate ID, and phone number. Click the Forward and Backward options to view all users in the list. Select a user, and continue with the current wizard function (such as modifying the selected user's outreach information).

If the user you select is not an outreach user, a message similar to the following displays.
Smith, Joe: Not outreach user.
The Create Outreach Information window displays for you to enter outreach information for the user. Click Close if you do not want to add outreach information for the selected user.
If the Current field is available when you begin to search for a user record, you can click the user ID and user name displayed in the field to select the most recently viewed or modified user record.
When you search by user ID or alternate ID, SirsiDynix Symphony automatically converts the user ID and alternate ID to uppercase characters.
When performing a user search by phone number, remove all punctuation and spaces from the telephone number when typing it in the Search For field. For example, 6185551234 returns user records with the phone number formatted as (618) 555-1234 or 618-555-1234.
The User Display Libraries policy controls which libraries' user records you can search and display. The User Maintenance Libraries policy controls which libraries' user records you can create and modify.
If a duplicate ID is found (perhaps because an ID used previously for a user has been assigned to a different user), then the system prompts you to select the user record you want.
