Catalog Search Fields Policy

The Catalog Search Fields policy is a Global Configuration policy that is read by the WorkFlows client at startup and stored as a global variable. A SirsiDynix Symphony administrator can use this policy to modify the Item Lookup list of catalog lookup methods, or create new policies for catalog lookup.

This policy controls what indexes are searched by the Item Search and Display wizard as well as the catalog searches in academic reserves, accountability, acquisitions, booking, cataloging, circulation, and serial control wizards and EPS. The search indexes presented in Advanced Search helper (currently only available in cataloging wizards) are defined by this policy.

Only catalog search and browse lookups can be modified or created. Other item lookup methods such as item ID, call number, fund ID, and so on, cannot be modified or created, and are not affected by this Global Configuration policy.

The Catalog Search Fields policy appears on the Searching tab of the Global Configuration wizard. Select the Catalog Search Fields policy and click Modify. From the Display Policy List window, you can create, display, modify, copy, or remove the Catalog Search Fields policies. Click Close to exit the wizard.

The following delivered Catalog Search Fields policies can be modified, but cannot be removed.

AUTHOR — Author Lookup
GENERAL — General Lookup
MESH — Medical Subject Lookup
PERTITLE — Periodical Title Lookup
SERIES — Series Title Lookup
SUBJECT — Subject Lookup
TITLE — Title Lookup

Attributes

This policy contains the following attributes.

Name

The Name attribute uniquely identifies the policy. This name is ten characters or less, and may not include spaces or punctuation, except for dash (-), underscore (_), and dollar sign ($). Additionally, the pipe character (|) may not be used.

Description

This attribute provides more information about the policy and its use by the library. The description may be up to 60 characters in length. Although the Description attribute may contain spaces and punctuation, the pipe character (|) cannot be used.

Label

The label appears next to the entry field where the user types the search term. This label may up to 20 characters in length.

Keyword Index

This attribute allows you to define which Keyword Index will be searched. Select a Keyword Index policy from the list.

Browse Index

This attribute allows you to define which Browse Index(es) the system will default to if a keyword search doesn’t retrieve any items. Select a Browse Index policy from the list.

Note: You are required to select a Browse Index policy.

Thesaurus

This attribute specifies that the thesaurus will be searched and that cross-references will appear if the typed search expression has any. Select a Thesaurus policy from the list.

Note: You are not required to select a Thesaurus policy.

Special Processing

Terms typed in the search field may receive one of the following types of special processing.

Author — This type affects browsing only. If no hits are found in the browse catalog, the term is right-circular rotated, and a check is made to see if a match is found. For example, if a user typed “Ayn Rand” and no match is found, then it would search “Rand Ayn.”
Phrase — This type is found on Chinese systems only. SirsiDynix Symphony will perform Chinese language phrase processing on terms typed in the search field.
Pinyin — This type is found on Chinese systems only. SirsiDynix Symphony will perform Chinese language phrase processing on terms typed in the search field.
Title — This type affects browsing also. If no hits are found, the stopword that was typed at the beginning of the search will be automatically dropped so that the matching is successful.

Note: This attribute by default is display only for the standard, nonremovable Catalog Search Fields policies.
