Search Window: SmartPort

The Search window includes Search and Browse functionality and the corresponding Search Results.

To begin a single field SmartPort search

Do the following to begin a labelled field SmartPort search.

The Operator facilitates the selection of Boolean operators (AND, NOT, OR). You can also select the positional operators N for near, which indicates that both words are in the same field of the record, and W for within, which means that the following word falls within so many words either way of the of the preceding word. The syntax of the within operator must be FIRST W/5 SECOND, which means that SECOND will be one of the 5 words displaying either before or after FIRST.

The Search Results remain empty until you have completed a search. After a productive search, the Search Results contain a numbered list of titles and/or authors. Searches are conducted in each of the connected servers, and Search Results display for each.

The following information is available in Search Results.

A statement at the top of each connected server indicates the number of hits for that server. If your search fails to retrieve any records, a heading bar displays for that server indicating that no records were found.
If the search string was improperly formatted or the server could not conduct a search for any reason, a system message displays.
If the Search Results list is too long to fit in the current window, a scroll bar displays at the right. By using the scroll bar, additional lines may be viewed. The scroll bar does not display if the complete record or list fits in the viewing window.
Click Display or double–click the title to display a full MARC record in the Viewing window.
Click somewhere in the search results of a database in order to use the Move Backward, Move Forward, Move to First, and Move to Last buttons for those search results.

If Browse is selected, the Search Results display an alphabetical list of terms that closely match the search text specified by Field to Search. The Browse results are generated from the index of the Z39.50 server being browsed. If the term that you type is an exact match, it will display as the first term in the list. If it is a word fragment, or not a match, the preceding term also appears. For example, the word fragment “anim” could return the following results.

Anima Psychoanalysis

Animal Attacks

Animal Behavior

Important Considerations When Using the SmartPort Search Window

When performing a search, SmartPort automatically checks the status of the connection to the destination database. If the connection has timed out, SmartPort will reconnect before attempting to perform the search.
The list of available fields is defined in the search name mapping policy for the server. For this reason, Operator and Field to Search may behave differently across servers. When supported, the qualifier may need to display either before or after the search term. The qualifier may work with a specified field search or only a general search. Test each server to determine the appropriate search strategies.
There is nothing in the Z39.50 standard regarding stopwords. Clients send a search to a server and the server’s stopword policy determines how the search is processed. For SirsiDynix Symphony sites, the stopword list is based on the default list of BRS stopwords, but these may be modified by each library.
If a search expression is typed that SmartPort does not understand, the following system message displays.

Invalid Search Expression

The Search and Browse buttons are mutually exclusive. Before you execute a search, you must indicate whether your search term should be searched or browsed on the server. A search retrieves records that include the search term. A browse places you into a Browse window displaying an alphabetical list of terms.
Browsing is not supported on all Z39.50 servers. If you attempt to conduct a search on a server that does not support the browsing option, you will get the following system message.

This server does not support scan.
