Adding and Editing UNIMARC and Other Format Coded Fields

UNIMARC records and records that have fields with controlled vocabularies contain coded fields. Coded fields differ from other entries in that the structure of these fields is defined. For more information about coded fields, go to the IFLANET Concise UNIMARC Classification Format Web page (http://archive.ifla.org/VI/8/unimarc-concise-bibliographic-format-2008.pdf).

In SirsiDynix Symphony, the coded fields are delivered for the catalog and authority formats. The following is a list of coded fields for the catalog formats.

SUNIMARC — U105, U106, U110, U115, U116, U117, U120, U121, U122, U125, U126, U130, U135, U140
UNIMARC — U105, U106, U110, U115, U116, U117, U120, U121, U122, U125, U126, U130, U135, U140

For catalog formats aside from DUBLINCORE, SirsiDynix delivers the following coded fields.

336, 337, 338

A field has to be assigned a CODED entry class to display as a coded field in the Record Editor. Fields not defined a CODED entry class are treated as variable length fields by default.

In the Record Editor (either MARC View or Descriptive View) you can do the following in coded fields:

Copy and Move
Add Fields Before
Add Fields After
Append Fields
Delete Fields
Edit Fields

Copy and Move

You can use standard Windows keyboard shortcuts to cut (move), copy, and paste coded fields.

Cut – Moves selected data to the Windows Clipboard
Copy – Makes a duplicate of the selected data and places it in the Clipboard
Paste – Pastes data from the Clipboard into the current location

Keep in mind that you can only cut, copy, and paste information from one tag at a time.

Add Fields Before

To add a coded field before the current field, do the following.

Add Fields After

To add a coded field after the current one, do the following.

Append Fields

In addition to adding coded fields, you can also append a coded field to a record. When you append a field to a record, SirsiDynix Symphony adds the new field at the end of the record.

Delete Fields

While editing a record in MARC View you can delete the current coded field from the record.

Edit Fields

You can change the value of most coded fields, all indicators and subfields, and add and remove fields and subfields.

Select the field you want to edit, and the cursor appears. You can move the cursor by using your arrow keys or by clicking elsewhere in the field.
To add a subfield at the end of the field, place the cursor in the field you want to edit (you can use the mouse or move the insertion point with the arrow keys), press SHIFT+BACKSLASH to add the delimiter symbol, and then type the new subfield code (for example, |a).
To delete a subfield, position the cursor in the subfield you want to delete, then press BACKSPACE or DELETE.
