Name Mapping in Z39.50

The Name Mapping policy sets up a supported search policy for each server to which you connect. Because different servers support different searches, a search Name Mapping policy is needed for each server you access. However, for multiple servers meeting minimum Level 1 Bath Profile compliance, it would be possible to use the same Name Mapping policy across servers. When you set up a Name Mapping policy for a server, it is important to define only those searches that are supported by the destination server, or the server will return a message that the search was not supported.

Always contact a destination server site for information about the Z39.50 Search Attributes that are supported. Delivered values for the delivered CATALOG Name Mapping policy are typically a good starting point for other SirsiDynix Symphony sites. The values defined in the Name Mapping policy are then used to set up server destinations in the Z39.50 Search Mapping value in the Gateway Element.

Selecting Use Attributes

For each defined server Name Mapping, you determine which Use Attributes are available when you are connected to the destination server. On the Mappings tab, the list of supported searches, or Search Names, will display. When you select to create or modify a mapping, you can define the following values.

Search Name is the SirsiDynix Symphony representation of a search. You can modify the display of the search in Z39.50 clients by changing the description, label, or icon of the Search Name, but the behavior of a search is always defined by the associated Z39.50 Use Attributes.
Search Use selects one or more Use Attributes that correspond to searches controlled by the Keyword Index on SirsiDynix Symphony Servers. Each MARC tag (and subfields) that contain this Use Attribute in the Keyword Index variation will be included in the Search.
Scan Use selects one or more Use Attributes that correspond to searches controlled by the Browse Index on SirsiDynix Symphony Servers. Each MARC tag (and subfields) that contain this Use Attribute in the Browse Index variations will be included in the list of headings in the Browse/Scan.
Sort Use selects a Use Attribute used for sorting result sets, if the server supports sorting. This attribute is also controlled in the Keyword Index policy on SirsiDynix Symphony Servers.

When you are working with a Keyword or Browse index, never select one of the six attribute searches. The Use Attributes that you must select directly correspond to Z39.50 Use Attributes (attribute position 1). When you are selecting an Search/Scan/Sort Use attribute, the Policy List gadget displays the possible Use Attribute policies. When you select one of the values, however, you must select only Use Attributes that correspond to the numerical Z39.50 representation which is less than 10000. Any of the six attribute “Use Attribute” searches should not be selected for the Keyword or Browse Index value.
