FAQs: Searching by ISBN/ISSN

You can perform catalog searches by ISBN or ISSN by setting up the appropriate Catalog Search Fields in the Global Configuration wizard. These searches may already be available and just need to be activated for a particular module, or you may need to create a new search.

How do I search by the ISBN/ISSN standard title ID in an orderline?

The ISBN/ISSN in an orderline cannot be searched from an Order Search. The ISBN and ISSN searches you define are catalog searches. However, because the standard title number is derived from the ISBN or ISSN in the bibliographic record, the correct orderline title will typically be found. You can actually get a more complete search using the ISBN and ISSN fields, since the 020 and 022 are repeatable fields, and only a single ISBN/ISSN number can be assigned.

The ISBN/ISSN field is created according to the following rules. For dated orders, the ISSN will be used first, and the ISBN will be used if no ISSN is available. For all other orders, the ISBN will be used first, and the ISSN will be used if no ISBN is available. However, any orderline that is not linked to a catalog record cannot be assigned an ISBN/ISSN field automatically from the bibliographic record, and any ISBN/ISSN that has been modified may not be searchable from the Order Search.
