FAQs: Character Prefix Dewey (CHAR_DEWEY) Sorting

The CHAR_DEWEY sort rule maps a single character to a two-digit numerical prefix that is added to the front of a DEWEY call number. This prefix is the primary sort key for the call number. After the prefix, the call number is sorted exactly as a Dewey call number.

CHAR_DEWEY Mapping Examples

The following examples show how call numbers are mapped to create the CHAR_DEWEY shelving key.

The call number is 823 BEA. The first character of the call number (8) maps to 14 in the CHAR_DEWEY sort mapping. The 14 is added as a prefix to the beginning of the call number, and the character position that originally held the 8 character is replaced with 0. The CHAR_DEWEY shelving key is 14 023 BEA.
The call number is *99 HOW. The first character of the call number (*) maps to 00 in the CHAR_DEWEY sort mapping. The 00 is added as a prefix to the beginning of the call number, and the character position that originally held the * character is replaced with 0. The CHAR_DEWEY shelving key is 00 099 HOW.
The call number is 79 HOW. The first character of the call number (7) maps to 13 in the CHAR_DEWEY sort mapping. The 13 is added as a prefix to the beginning of the call number, and the character position that originally held the 7 character is replaced with 0. Since the number following the prefix is to have three digits, another 0 is added before the remaining number, 9. The CHAR_DEWEY shelving key is 13 009 HOW.
