Browse Index Wizard
Browse indexes are alphabetic lists of terms found in the catalog. When a browse is performed in the catalog, the browse term is looked up in browse indexes. The Browse Index policy creates specific indexes for different types of terms so that browsing can be more precise. Browse Index policies are used in OPAC Configuration to determine which browse indexes are used when a specific type of browse is selected from the Browse Through Catalog By window. In the Title Browsing Element, the Browse Index policy is identified for use in the Browse Catalog By Title window.
From the List Policies window, you can create, display, modify, copy, or remove the Browse Index policies. Click Close to exit the wizard.
The following Browse Index policies are delivered with SirsiDynix Symphony.
• | AUTHOR |
• | MESH |
• | PERTITLE |
• | SERIES |
• | SUBJECT |
• | TITLE |
Attributes
The Browse Index policy contains the following attributes.
• | Name |
• | Description |
• | Rotate |
• | Use Attribute |
This attribute uniquely identifies a specific browse index. This name is ten characters or less, and may not include spaces or punctuation, except for dash (-), underscore (_), and dollar sign ($). Additionally, the pipe character (|) may not be used.
This attribute provides more information about the policy and its use by the library. The description may be up to 60 characters in length. Although the Description attribute may contain spaces and punctuation, the pipe character (|) cannot be used.
This attribute determines whether or not phrases posted to the browse index should be rotated. Rotation causes multiple postings of the phrase, in each instance with a different subfield beginning the phrase. Subject entries are rotated in the standard delivery of SirsiDynix Symphony.
For example, if a Browse Index policy uses rotation, the phrase “Indians of North America|x Government Relations|z 1934–” would be posted to the browse index as follows.
INDIANS OF NORTH AMERICA GOVERNMENT RELATIONS
1934GOVERNMENT RELATIONS 1934 INDIANS OF NORTH AMERICA
1934 INDIANS OF NORTH AMERICA GOVERNMENT RELATIONS
When a Z39.50 client is used to browse the library catalog, each type of browse must be mapped to a particular attribute defined in the Z39.50 standard. Z39.50 attributes describe different types of searches. Browse Index policies include a Z39.50 Use Attribute field to link a browse index to a Z39.50 attribute so that incoming searches from the Z39.50 client are performed against the correct browse index. Select a Z39.50 attribute from the list.
Note: The Use Attribute policy number appears in parentheses next to the policy name. For example, the AUTHOR attribute displays the policy number 1003.
