Global Call Number Modification Wizard

The Global Call Number Modification wizard allows you to update one or more call number records for the same title in batch. The same modifications can be made to more than one call number of a title more efficiently using this wizard.

For additional information about how this wizard modifies call numbers see FAQs: Modifying Call Numbers Using the Global Call Number Modification Wizard.

To update some or all call numbers of a title

Note: A “Title does not have any call numbers for the selected library” message will display when limiting by library and the title has no call numbers for this library. To select another library, click Modify again.

Remember, the prefix is included in the base call number. For example, if you want to change FIC WISER to FIC WISEMAN, you must type “FIC WISEMAN” in the Base Call Number box to retain the FIC prefix in the base call number. To specifically modify just the prefix, use the Modify Call Number Prefix option.

Note: The call number prefix is defined as all characters preceding the first space in the base call number. For example, in the call number Fic SMITH, the characters Fic will be selected as the prefix. But, it also means that in the call number PZ3 .F456, the characters PZ3 will be selected as the prefix, since there is a space following the 3. If no space is found in the base call number, the call number will not be modified. For example, the call number PZ3.F456 would not be modified. Leading spaces in a call number are ignored when selecting the prefix.

Click one of the following options.

Note: The Reset next step button does not un-do the changes made to the call numbers; it simply returns you to the modify window so you can make additional changes without having to search for the same title and set of call numbers again.

If there are more than 100 call numbers to modify, the wizard will display a message t hat, depending on system performance, it may be best to submit these changes in Report mode.

When modifying call numbers in the Global Call Number Modification wizard, it is useful to copy and paste the portion of the call number to be modified from the Call Number field in the right pane. This will help eliminate typographical errors and will also make it easier to see if there is a space in the call number. However, when copying/pasting call numbers that contain analytics, be certain to paste only the part of the call number preceding the |z into the base call number modification text box. For example, for call number E839.5 .N379|zV. 15 NO. 5 FALL 1998, be certain to paste only the E839.5 .N379 portion of the call number into the base call number text box. The analytic portion of the call number, V. 15 NO. 5 FALL 1998, should be pasted into the call number analytic text box.

After modifying call numbers, click one of the following options.

Return to Search to return to the Item Search window
Reset to return to the modify window and make additional changes to the same call numbers (available when using interactive mode)
Close to exit the wizard

If the resulting call number is too long (more than 40 characters), the call number will not be modified and will be reported as not modified.

Users can only add, edit and delete call numbers for libraries in their Call Number Maintenance library group.
