Fixed Field Codes

The fixed length fields, often called fixed fields, contain numeric or alphanumeric codes identifying certain key features of the title described. The following tables list valid fixed fields in the seven MARC 21 bibliographic formats; each is accompanied by an example of the type of data that can be used in that field.

This is not a full listing of codes.

Nonfiling Indicators in SirsiDynix Symphony MARC Records

Some MARC 21 entries are structured with two special markers after the entry ID called indicators. Indicators have a variety of uses, but for all title fields, one of the indicators is a nonfiling character count. A number for 0 - 9 entered in this position represents the number of characters that come before the first significant character. Some title fields use the first indicator position to count nonfiling characters; some title fields use the second indicator position to count nonfiling characters.

SirsiDynix Symphony MARC Record Subfield Codes

Subfield codes consist of two characters which precede specially marked portions of descriptive text. The first character in any subfield code in a SirsiDynix Symphony record is a pipe (|). The character following the pipe can be a lowercase letter, a numeral, or a mark of punctuation. Subfield codes set off or delimit a part of a text entry for special treatment, such as standard catalog display, indexing, and authority control.

This is not a full listing of subfields.
