MARC Holdings Entries
MARC holdings are rule-based entries similar to bibliographic
MARC entries that permit the appropriate display of serials holdings in the OPAC. The following information that appears in the OPAC is generated from a MARC Holdings record.
The following basic descriptions refer to the most common holdings entries and subfield.

For detailed information about entries, indicators, and subfields used in these fields, see the MARC 21 Concise Format for Holdings Data (http://lcweb.loc.gov/marc/holdings/echdhome.html).
Location: 852
The subfield c of this field is required to create a MARC Holdings record. It is based on Location policies in your library. Use the Show Valid 852 Locations helper to select a |c location. Once an 852 is created, SirsiDynix Symphony adds a |= for internal use. If holdings were created from serials control, a default value may be provided at the time of creation.

This field is used to link electronic resources to the MARC holdings record. The information contained in this field is sufficient to allow for the electronic transfer of a file, subscription to an electronic journal, or logon to an electronic resource. This field will display in the detailed item information in the OPAC, and in the Item Search and Display wizard and Display a Serial Control wizard in WorkFlows. It is important that the 856 field be immediately below the 852 field.
Patterns: 853
This field, referred to in the MARC 21 Concise Format for Holdings Data as the Captions & Patterns field, can be automatically generated by serials control and establishes the format of the display. It allows the data to be compressed, and provides the appropriate captions for the data, as follows.

Link and Sequence Number Subfield: |8
This field is used in all of the MARC holdings tags from 853 to 878. At its fullest, |8 is structured as follows.
[linking number].[sequence number]
Only the linking number portion is used in the Caption and Pattern (853) and Textual Holdings (866-868) fields. In Enumeration and Chronology (863) fields, |8 contains both a linking number and a sequence number to ensure the proper display of information.
Textual Holdings: 866, 867, and 868
These fields contain a textual description of holdings. They can be generated automatically when unexpected issues are received. An 866 is generated by the Check In Issues of a Serial wizard when Special Issue is used to receive an unpredicted Basic issue, an 867 is generated when Special Issue is used to receive a Supplement issue, and an 868 is generated when Special Issue is used to receive an Index issue, as follows.
