FAQs: Using Electronic Reserves

The electronic reserves feature allows online documents to be placed on reserve. SirsiDynix Symphony links a hypertext transfer protocol (HTTP) address to the list of reserves that the user can search by course ID, course name, or instructor in the Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC). This HTTP address allows SirsiDynix Symphony to automatically access the information via the Internet.

A browser is required.

Creating a Catalog Record for Electronic Reserves

When you create a catalog record for electronic reserves, you will use the Electronic Access entry tag (856) to enter the item’s HTTP address.

If the 856 tag does not already display in the User Entries field of the wizard properties, ask your system administrator to add it. The 856 tag must be present for you to create a catalog record for electronic reserves. Your system administrator can also configure the Add Brief Title wizard properties to display additional fields for you to add information such as the instructor’s name.

Creating a Reserve Record for Electronic Reserves

Creating active reserve records for electronic documents adds these records with their documents or with the address(es) linking the documents to the list of reserves that the user can search by course ID, course name, or instructor in the Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC), so students will not have to ask for a physical copy of an article.

To create a reserve record for electronic reserves

The HTTP address must be entered in the data area in the form of |uURL: http address. For example, the staff member enters the following information in the 856 tag data area. The |u subfield code precedes the Uniform Resource Locator (URL), which includes the HTTP address. The |z subfield code starts a public note, which in this example is the name of the organization that maintains the information at the HTTP address.
