FAQs: Placing Reserve Holds

What is a reserve hold?

Typically, a reserve hold can only be filled with a reserve item, unless the Reserve Hold check box is selected in the Place Hold wizard properties. If this check box is selected, a reserve item or non-reserve item can be use d to fill the hold. If an item is on reserve, and you place a reserve hold on it, the hold will become available the next time the item is returned to the Reserve Desk. The reserve hold will be satisfied when you check out the item from the Reserve Desk.

If you place a standard hold (not a reserve hold), this hold can only be satisfied by an item in normal circulation. If you place a standard hold on a reserved item, the hold will not be available as long as the item is on reserve. Even though the item is discharged and available at the Reserve Desk, the standard hold will not become available. The standard hold will become available when the item is taken off reserve.

Only staff members are allowed to place a reserve hold because reserve materials are usually circulated for short loan periods.

The location of an item being held for a Reserve Desk is Reserves, not Holds.

What is the difference between the Display Hold Reserve property and the Hold Reserve Desk Item property in the Place Hold wizard Properties screen?

The Display Hold Reserve property controls the display of the Reserve Hold check box in the Place Hold wizard. The Reserve Hold check box allows you to choose if the hold is to be placed on items at the Reserve Desk, or on items in regular circulation. The Hold Reserve Desk item property, if selected, specifies that all holds placed by the Place Hold wizard will only be items at the Reserve Desk.

The property you use depends on what kind of holds you want staff members to place. If you want to allow staff members to place holds on reserved items and items in regular circulation, use the Reserve Hold check box. If you want staff members to place holds only on reserved items, use the Hold Reserve Desk item property.
